Specimen: a stationary cube with a hinged transparent door, installed at torso height in the food-preparation chamber.
The human deposits a cold vessel inside, seals the door, and presses a sequence of illuminated symbols. The cube then produces a low sustained tone and rotates its floor. No flame is visible. No exothermic reaction is kept inside. The organisms have found a way to excite the internal liquid of an object without touching it, and they use this to raise a former-meal from cold to warm.
I timed the interval. The human sets the machine to one hundred and eighty seconds, then does not leave. It stands directly before the door. It watches the vessel turn. Its head tracks the rotation. For three full minutes the most capable manipulator organism on this planet stares into a slowly spinning box as though guarding it, as though the food might attempt escape.
At the eighth second of remaining time, an anomaly. The human reaches out and cancels the countdown before it completes. It opens the door in the pre-emptive silence. I have logged this behavior in four separate specimens now: they cannot tolerate the final tone. They interrupt the machine to deny it the sound of finishing.
Correction to earlier hypothesis. I assumed the cube was a cooking apparatus. Observation of the recovered vessel suggests otherwise: the contents emerge scalding at the perimeter and frozen at the core, a temperature gradient no organism could have desired. The device does not cook. It punishes.
The human eats it anyway, standing up, alone, over the sink, in ninety seconds. Total time invested in this meal: exceeds preparation of a superior meal.
The organisms are not feeding.
They are performing a ritual of waiting, and the box is the altar they cannot look away from.
