Field observation
Nothing here is obvious. Least of all to them.

Field note. The colony has designated one dawn per solar cycle as a sanctioned frenzy.

They gather in the dark outside a large climate-controlled box, hundreds of them, breath condensing, bodies pressed into a single vibrating mass. I logged the temperature as hostile and the mood as pre-migratory. At a signal, the barrier lifts. They pour inward at a velocity their bodies do not normally permit. Several fall. Others step over the fallen without slowing, which I have marked as a rare and honest display of the species' true hierarchy of priorities.

Inside, they seize objects. Not objects they lack, I note, for many already possess these objects at home, but objects marked with a smaller number on a placard. The smaller number induces a physiological arousal I initially mistook for terror: dilated pupils, elevated pulse, rapid grasping motions. Two humans located the same rectangular screen simultaneously. They pulled against each other, teeth bared, until one released it and stood breathing, empty-handed, staring at nothing.

Preliminary hypothesis: the box distributes essential resources, and this is a survival event.

Correction. There is more of everything than any of them could use. The shelves are engineered to overflow. The scarcity is fictional, printed on the placards, and the colony knows this and participates anyway. They are not hunting food. They are hunting the number.

I watched one human carry a stacked tower of boxes to the exit, cradling it against the chest the way I have seen them hold their small ones. It smiled. It had spent tokens it did not have on things it did not need, and it smiled, and I could not classify the reading, so I have logged the entire species as functionally content and moved on.
