Field observation
Nothing here is obvious. Least of all to them.

Field note. The colony has a chamber built for waiting, and they arrive at it before their star has risen.

The organisms enter in a defeated posture, spines curved, ocular fluid crusted, dragging wheeled containers that hold duplicate skins and small pressurized cylinders of scented paste. They have not slept. This is not accidental. They set audible alarms to interrupt their own rest specifically so they could come here, to stand in a line, to hand a rectangle of laminated identity to another organism who looks at it and hands it back.

No object is exchanged. The transaction is purely one of being seen and permitted.

I logged the ambient stimuli. A recorded voice, disembodied, issues warnings no one obeys. A machine dispenses a heated brown stimulant liquid; the organisms clutch these cylinders against their sternums as though drawing heat from a small captive fire. Many of them have brought their own reactive glowing rectangles and stare into them rather than at the enormous transparent wall, beyond which their transport vessels sit steaming in the cold.

Correction to earlier hypothesis. I had assumed the chamber was a punishment. But I observed one small organism, recently hatched, pressed flat against the transparent wall, tracking a vessel as it lifted from the ground. It made a high repeated sound. The larger organisms did not stop it. They watched it watch.

I do not have a classification for the response this produced in my logging apparatus. I have marked it as instrument error and will recalibrate.

They endure the sleeplessness, the lines, the recorded warnings, all of it, in order to be flung across the planet toward other organisms who are, presumably, waiting in identical chambers. The species will cross any distance to stand near a specific other. I find this inefficient.

I have requested no transfer.
