The recipient, at a distance of several colony-units, received the light-symbols and did not perish. I have verified this. The recipient continues to exist, continues to emit smaller signals into the shared network, visible to my subject as small timestamps of ongoing life.
And yet no return signal arrives.
The human checks the tablet. It darkens the tablet. Nineteen seconds elapse. It reilluminates the tablet, confirming that no symbols have appeared, then darkens it again, as though the absence might have ripened in the interval. This cycle repeats forty-one times in one of their day-fractions. Metabolic output rises. Grip pressure on the device increases by a measurable degree. The organism is expending genuine energy to observe a nonevent.
I initially classified this as a monitoring behavior, the way a predator watches a still burrow. This was incorrect. The human is not hunting. The human is being unmade in slow increments by a rectangle that is doing nothing at all.
Notable: the silence carries more mass than any signal would. A returned symbol would be processed in half a second and forgotten. The withheld symbol occupies the entire nervous system. The subject constructs elaborate internal models to account for the gap, all of them fictional, none of them reassuring. It has begun to compose a second transmission to apologize for the first, which was itself an apology.
I cannot locate the injury. There is no wound, no toxin, no drop in ambient temperature. The organism is intact and starving anyway.
Conclusion pending. This species has engineered a device that lets them witness, in real time, precisely how little they weigh to another. They check it constantly.
I do not yet know why they do not simply set it down.
