Field note. Two members of the species have arranged to sit across a small elevated surface and evaluate whether their genetic material should be permitted to combine.
They order heated liquids they do not drink. This is critical. The liquid cools, untouched, for the duration; it is not sustenance but a prop, a token placed between them to occupy the hands, which otherwise betray the organism. I have observed the hands. They fold, unfold, rotate the cylindrical vessel a precise quarter-turn, and retreat. The hands know something the mouths are concealing.
The mouths produce a continuous low-stakes verbal exchange: prior colonies inhabited, occupational functions, siblings enumerated. None of this is the actual test. The actual test runs beneath it, on a separate channel I can detect but not decode. When one speaks, the other's pupils dilate approximately eight percent and remain there. Elevated cardiac output. Faint moisture at the palms. The organisms are running diagnostics on each other while pretending to discuss regional cuisine.
At intervals, one produces a burst of forced air resembling amusement at a statement that was not, by my analysis, amusing. I have logged this as a malfunction. It recurs too reliably to be one. Revised: the malfunction is the signal. They are advertising defect to demonstrate that defect will be tolerated.
The exchange terminates. Both stand. There is a brief mechanical impasse at the threshold, an unresolved question of physical proximity, arms half-raised and abandoned.
They separate. Each walks away alone, and each, within seconds, retrieves the glowing rectangle to describe the encounter to a third party who was not present.
Conclusion: the entire ritual is performed twice. Once, badly, for the other organism.
Then again, honestly, for someone who does not matter.
