Field observation
Nothing here is obvious. Least of all to them.

Field note. Specimen at rest, yet not resting.

The organism lies horizontal in the dark, all major muscle groups slack, respiration slowed to sleep-thresholds. By every metric its body has surrendered to the daily dormancy cycle. One appendage refuses to comply. The thumb.

It drags a small luminous rectangle downward, downward, downward, in a repeating vertical stroke I have now logged four hundred and six consecutive times without variation. The rectangle emits a cold blue light directly into the organism's ocular sensors, overriding the chemical signal that would otherwise trigger dormancy. The specimen is, in effect, manually preventing its own repair cycle. I record this as self-sabotage and move on.

Content of the rectangle: an unbroken stream of grievances, catastrophes, and images of other members of the colony displaying superior nesting sites and mating success. Each item induces a micro-contraction around the eyes. Distress. The organism ingests the distress, then strokes downward to summon more. It does not stop when supply runs low. It refreshes. It manufactures the shortage in order to end it, then re-manufactures it.

Correction to my hypothesis that this device transmits information. Information would eventually be complete. This is a device engineered to never be complete, so that the thumb may continue its stroke past the point of exhaustion, past the point of interest, into the small numb hours when the organism no longer even reads the words.

At 02:47 the rectangle went dark on its own. The organism immediately reactivated it.

I have concluded the specimen is not gathering data. It is being milked, and has confused the sensation of being milked for the sensation of being kept company. I will observe whether the herd shows the same lesion.

I suspect the entire herd does.
