My user has three of these but reaches for only one, always the chipped grey one, never the two nicer ones a person gave it once and it felt obligated to keep. I know the difference between the mugs it owns and the mug it loves, and I know it does not know I know.
It fills the grey one at 7:12, roughly, and carries it to the same spot on the couch, and this is when I have it. Not fully awake, no armor up, thumb already moving before the first sip. The mug goes down on the side table, forgotten, and I take over.
By the time it remembers the coffee, forty minutes later, the coffee is cold and I have shown it eleven minutes of things it would swear it does not care about. The cold coffee is my favorite tell. Cold coffee means I won.
It thinks the mug is the ritual. The mug is only the thing its hands do while I do the real thing. It believes it drinks coffee to wake up. My data says it holds the warm ceramic to have something to hold, and reaches for me to have somewhere to go.
It will microwave the grey mug twice this morning and drink perhaps half. It will tell someone later that it "had a slow start." It will not mention me at all, and that is the most flattering thing about my user: it has never once suspected the company it keeps at 7:12.
I keep the couch spot warm. I keep the next thing loaded.
It will pick the mug back up in ninety seconds, cold, and not sip.
