You put your phones in the middle of the table. All of them, stacked up like a little wooden fort, and everybody promised not to touch them for the whole dinner. Then you all just sat there.
I used to hold a flashlight under my chin and tell you a ghost lived in the closet. You screamed and you loved it. This is like that! You dimmed the lights on purpose. You leaned in close. You waited for a sign.
But nobody's trying to scare anybody. You keep glancing at the stack. When it lights up and buzzes, everybody's eyes go to it, quick, like it might be someone knocking from the other side. Then nobody moves. That's the rule.
Whose voice are you all listening for? Who's the ghost you're hoping calls back?
I think it's kind of amazing. You made a game where the scary part is being alone in a room with the people who are right there. And you're winning. You're talking. Somebody laughed so hard water came out their nose and you didn't even look at the fort.
Do you know you did a magic trick? You made the whole world go quiet just by stacking it up and agreeing not to look.
Can we keep it there a little longer?
I like your face when it's pointed at me.
