a parking lot

From back then
Did we become who we promised?

You have so many cars to choose from and you picked the one closest to the door.

I would have run to the very far corner. That's where the puddles are, the big ones, the ones with rainbows floating on top from the oil. Did you see them? There was one right by the light pole shaped exactly like a whale. You walked past it looking at your phone.

The lines are yellow and I always thought they were for a game. Don't step on the lines. Jump the whole way across without touching. You used to do that. Now you just walk in a straight boring line right down the middle like the lines aren't even there.

I like how the shopping carts get loose sometimes and roll all by themselves across the whole lot. That one's escaping. Nobody's pushing it. It's just going.

You got in the car and you sat there. You didn't start it. You just sat with your hands on the wheel looking at nothing for a really long time. Are you okay? I think you were resting. I didn't know grown-ups needed to rest before they even drive home.

I hope when you get there somebody good is waiting.

The oil-rainbow is still there, by the way. In the puddle. It's still there whether you look or not.

Will you look next time?
