From back then
Did we become who we promised?

You put the bowl in and pushed the buttons and then you just stood there. Watching it spin. I stood there too. We used to think that was the best part, remember? The light comes on and the plate turns and you can see your food going in a slow circle like a tiny carousel, and you don't even have to do anything.

But you didn't watch it. You looked at the little glowing rectangle in your hand instead. The whole time. Even the beep didn't make you look up.

I know why we loved the spinning. It felt like magic. You put in something cold and you wait and you get back something warm, and nobody had to light a fire or wait an hour. That is magic. That is the most magic thing in the whole kitchen and it lives on the counter and you use it every single day.

The numbers still count down. 3, 2, 1. I always wanted to yell blastoff. Do you still want to, even a little, and just don't?

You leaned on the counter with your eyes closed for a second. You looked tired in a way I don't understand yet.

Here is what I want to know. When it beeps, and the light goes off, and it's warm again like you asked. Do you still, for just one half of one second, think it's a little bit amazing?

I think you do. I saw you smell it.

Please keep smelling it.
