the first night in an empty apartment

From back then
Did we become who we promised?

You did it. You have your own place.

I keep walking around it because I want to see everything. There is nothing here yet, so my voice bounces off the walls, and I like that. I stood in the middle of the big room and turned in circles until I got dizzy. Nobody told me to stop. Nobody is here to tell me anything.

There is no bed yet, so you put the blanket on the floor by the window. Just like when we made forts, remember? Except this whole place is the fort. The whole thing is ours.

You ate crackers for dinner standing up and you looked a little sad about it. Why? This is the best. We are allowed to eat wherever we want now. We could sleep in the kitchen if we felt like it.

The lights from outside come through the window and move across the ceiling when cars go by. I watched them for a long time. You did too. I saw you stop taking things out of boxes and just lie there and look up.

You promised me once we would have a place where we could put our stuff exactly where we wanted, and nobody could come in and change it. And here it is. It's empty because we get to decide everything.

You're not scared to be alone, are you?

I think you're brave.

I think you're the bravest one I know.
