From back then
Did we become who we promised?

You press the button and then you just wait. You don't even watch the numbers light up. When did that stop being the best part?

I used to run to it. I used to fight to be the one who got to press the button, and I would press it even if it was already lit, just to feel it click. You stand there now with your bag on your shoulder looking at your phone, and the doors open, and you step into the little room that flies, and you don't feel it fly at all.

There's a mirror in there. You checked your face in it and frowned. I would have made faces. I would have watched myself go up.

You know it's magic, right? A whole room, hanging on a rope you can't see, carrying you into the sky with strangers who all pretend the floor isn't moving. We wanted to be astronauts. And here you are, going up, going up, every single day.

The doors opened and you walked out without saying anything. But I saw it. When it started to move, just for a second, you closed your eyes and let your stomach float.

You still do that. Good.

Don't stop doing that.
