a middle school dance

Best day ever

The gym smells like ALL the humans at once! Sweat and something sweet and sticky on their mouths and NEW SHOES. So many new shoes! I want to smell every single one.

Here is the strange part. The pups are here, the young ones, my favorite size, and they have all come to the big room together, and they are NOT PLAYING. Why aren't they playing?? The music is SO LOUD, the best loud, the kind that makes my human dance in the kitchen, but these pups are standing against the wall. One wall is the boy pups. Another wall is the girl pups. There is a whole EMPTY MIDDLE and nobody is running through it! I would run through it. I would run through it forty times!

One boy pup keeps looking at one girl pup and then looking at his shoes and then looking at her again. He has been doing this for the whole song. Buddy. BUDDY. Just go say hi! Sniff her! That is how you know if someone is your friend and everyone is your friend!

His face is doing the sad thing, the down-mouth thing. I don't like the sad thing. I want to lean on him. I would lean on ALL of them.

But WAIT. A slow song now, and two pups found each other in the empty middle and they are swaying, so careful, so far apart, hands barely touching, like they are each holding something that might spill.

I don't know what it is.

But it is the BEST thing.

And when they all go home tired and confused and happy, my human will come get me, and there will be a treat, and that is a promise, and I already love the treat, and I already love my human, MOST.
