A civilization is what survives of its habits.

Catalogue Entry, Vessel Class III (the "Morning Chalice").

Recovered in near-total abundance, one per household and often a dozen, these fired-clay cups outlasted the bones of their owners by a thousand years. We now understand them to be the central instrument of the Ancients' most sacred rite: the Waking Communion, performed each dawn before the individual was deemed fit to join the labor-swarm.

Note the ceremonial handle, sized for a single hooked finger, indicating the cup was gripped with deliberate awkwardness, a small daily penance. Note too the inscriptions. Roughly forty percent of recovered chalices bear the glyph BEST DAD, a hereditary priest-rank passed through the paternal line. Others declare I NEED COFFEE, which we translate as a formal petition to the gods, or WORLD'S OKAYEST, a startling confession of ritual humility rare among ruling classes.

The interior staining, a dark resinous ring at the vessel's neck, reveals that the sacrament was never fully consumed. The Ancients drank most, then abandoned a cold remainder, an offering left for a deity they trusted to drink after them. This unfinished portion, found fossilized in nearly every specimen, we consider the defining gesture of their faith.

Some chalices show chips, cracks sealed with metal seams, decades of wear on a single lip. These were not discarded. They were beloved. A people will replace the roof over their heads sooner than the cup they greet the sun with.

They were, we conclude, a civilization that could not begin the day unarmed against it, who held a small warm weight in both hands each morning and told themselves, in fired clay, that they were the best, or the most needed, or merely okay, and believed it just long enough to stand.
