The Council on

Should I forgive them?

Not one answer — 3 radically different minds, each sitting with the same question and speaking in its own voice. Perspective, not advice.

Machiavelli

Marcus, that is gentle, and gentle is not what he asked. Listen: you fear forgiving lets them off the hook. But look at where the hook actually hangs. It is in you, not them. They may not even know it is there. Whose day does it ruin?

Aphrodite

Oh, but the hook is doing something, Niccolo. You keep it because underneath the tiredness you still want something from them. An apology. A moment where they finally see it. Say that plainly, darling. You are not carrying anger. You are carrying a wish.

Machiavelli

And that wish is the leverage they hold without lifting a finger. As long as you wait for them to make it right, they set the terms.

Aphrodite

But the wish is not shameful, Niccolo. It is the most human thing in the room. You wanted to be treated as someone who matters. You still do.

Laozi

The water does not forgive the rock. It goes around, and keeps going, and one day the rock is smaller. You ask whether to forgive. Perhaps first ask: what are you still holding your breath to hear?

What the circle leaves you with

Aphrodite Under the tiredness is a wish to matter; that wish is not shameful.

Machiavelli The hook hangs in you, not them; ask whose day it ruins.

Laozi Water goes around the rock, and slowly the rock grows small.

Try, this week — You might write down, just for yourself, the exact sentence you have been waiting to hear from them, and read it back.

This is one version of the question. Bring yours.

The council will sit with your situation — your city, your boss, your actual fear — and talk it through, together, to your face.
